Context:
A workshop to introduce Ekistics (The Science of Human Settlements) with
particular emphasis on the results of C.A. Doxiadis’ development of a formal
structure to bring a consistent and systematic approach to the study of human
settlements. Since Ekistics is trans-disciplinary, bringing together the
interests of the numerous disciplines and professions responding to problems of
human settlements, the ekistic frameworks which form the core of the workshop
are pertinent to these interests. They are also directly applicable to the
issues of the GreenAge II Symposium.
The workshop includes the following:
-Ekistic elements
-Basic principles
-Quality of Life principles
-The synthesis of frameworks: the Anthropocosmos Model
-These frameworks will be explained within a local reconnaissance study.
Target:
Purpose:
An introduction to Constantinos Apostolos Doxiadis (1913-75), founder of Ekistics: The Science of Human Settlements, and a brief background to his initiative to lay the foundation of a holistic discipline for the studies of all types of human settlements.
Study Questions:
1. What do we know about C.A. Doxiadis?
2. What were the significant periods in his life for forming his ideas which came to be called Ekistics?
3. Why did he reject the status quo where the study of human settlements, towns and cities in particular, was distributed across most disciplines?
4. Why was inter-disciplinary collaboration seen to be insufficient for a proper understanding of problems of human settlements?
This is a
workshop to introduce Ekistics (The Science of Human Settlements) with
particular emphasis on the results of C.A. Doxiadis’ development of a formal
structure to bring a consistent and systematic approach to the study of human
settlements. Since Ekistics is
trans-disciplinary, bringing together the interests of the numerous disciplines
and professions responding to problems of human settlements, the Ekistic
frameworks which form the core of the workshop are pertinent to these
interests. They are also directly
applicable to the issues of the GreenAge II Symposium. The workshop includes the following:
·
Ekistic units;
·
Ekistic elements;
·
Basic principles;
·
Quality of Life principles; and
·
The synthesis of frameworks: the Anthropocosmos Model.
These
frameworks will be explained within a local reconnaissance study.
